Rocket Seeds
Eruca vesicaria sativa
Also called Arugula. The young leaves have a nice horseradish flavor. Rocket has tasty peppery flavored edible flowers and can be used along with the greens in salads and as a garnish. We love to grow Arugula in spring and nibble the new leaves as an addition to other bitters. This helps stimulate our digestion and wake it up after the heavy foods of winter. The tangy leaves are delicious in salads, of course, but also really spice up a pizza or burger. In addition to its great flavor, arugula is also rich in vitamin C and potassium - and the Romans thought it was an aphrodisiac! Arugula is an annual, and similar to cilantro or other quick growing greens, you may want to plan to do several plantings to have an ongoing harvest throughout the summer. Leave some seed pods in the garden for the birds to enjoy.
Seed Germinating Tips: Plant seeds in soil mix indoors or outdoors after temperatures have warmed. Light helps this seed to germinate, so prepare soil, sprinkle seeds over the surface, and press into soil. Water gently and thoroughly with warm water and cover to retain moisture. Do not let the seeds dry out while they are germinating. 14-21 days to germination.
