Hibiscus sabdariffa
Hibiscus flowers make a beautiful, wine colored drink that is refreshing and also good for the kidneys. We begain enjoying this drink in Mexico many years ago where it is called 'Agua de Jamaica' and is served at almost all the taco stands as a cold beverage like lemonade. Hibiscus sabdariffa is a diuretic and refrigerant which means it lowers abnormal body heat.
To make a tea: Pour 1 cup boiling water over 1 tsp. herb - cover and steep 3-5 minutes. If it is served hot it is called 'Hibiscus Tea'. 'Jamaica' is a little tart so we sweeten it with a sugar infusion made with Lemon Verbena leaves.
