More about Eco-Printing:

Learning eco printing techniques and processes is a fascinating way to increase knowledge of the natural world by collaboration with the innate properties of plants, minerals, and insects. The resulting creations are plant portraits, perfect for clothing, home décor, fabric and paper arts, or framing.

All eco printing workshops include several essential steps. Some are lengthy and therefore completed by the instructor ahead of time:

- Acquire and assemble “target” materials – paper, fabric, etc.

- Prepare materials by scouring and mordanting, 1-3 day process

- Collect, sort, and press plants, leaves, and flowers for printing

- Dye target fabric, if color background is desired

- Lay out target fabric or paper and arrange plants upon it

- Roll fabric with plants, “bundling” by tightly binding on a cylinder;or press papers with plants between tiles and secure by clamping tightly.

- Heat by steaming or immersion in a dyebath for 1.5 to 4 hours, depending on materials

- Unroll/unclamp “bundles” and remove plants to view the results.

Wash gently, rinse, dry, and press.

Workshops vary in length from 2.5 hours for paper to 4 hours for prints on fabric, with an additional hour if using eucalyptus leaves.
