Beebalm, Bergamot Seeds
Monarda didyma
Description and Uses: A very ornamental plant used to make orange mint flavored tea. Long used by American Indians for medicinal purposes along the Oswego River near Lake Ontario where the herb abounded, hence the common name Oswego Tea. After the Boston Tea Party in 1773, colonists used Oswego Tea instead of tea from India to protest tea tax.
Seed Germinating Tips: We recommend starting Bergamot indoors to regulate temperature, moisture and light. Sow seeds in sterile seedling mix. Barely cover seeds with soil and cover with plastic to retain moisture. Transplant outdoors after true leaves have formed and danger of frost has past. Harden off plants in a sheltered location for one week prior to planting to reduce transplant shock.
