Angelica Seed - Angelica archangelica Description and Uses: A large, tropical looking herb. Umbrella-like flowers of yellow-green form clusters in the second year. They were said to bloom on the feast of the Archangel Michael, giving rise to the name. Ancient herbalists claimed that chewing the root of angelica would cure numerous diseases and protect against evil and witchcraft. Modern herbalists consider it a tonic and a stimulant. All parts of angelica are aromatic and all parts are used. Candied pieces of tender stems are used for cake decorations (see Borage). Stems and leaves can be used in salads. Blanch and combine with rhubarb in preserves. Seed Germinating Tips: This seed requires a long period of cold stratification. Press seeds into sterile potting mix - do not cover with soil. Water in, cover seed flat with fine wire to keep rodents and birds out and leave outside through the winter months (or place in the refrigerator for 2-3 months.) Bring indoors when signs of germination begin. Can be sporadic.
